What Can We Do to Improve Computer Education? Opensource.com (03/06/15) Remy DeCausemaker

ACM's Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) 2015 conference for computer science educators was held March 4-7 in Kansas City, MO. The SIGCSE Technical Symposium provided an opportunity to address issues with computer programs, curricula, and courses at all levels of instruction. Last year, Khan Academy's Pamela Fox was part of a panel titled "Disruptive Innovation in CS Education." In an interview, Fox shared her thoughts on how open source fits into education and the future of computer education. Fox said people have to do a better job of teaching open source and sharing, and counter the idea that using someone else's work is cheating, which children may be encountering in school. She also said coding academies can help improve computer education and should be at the SIGCSE event. "Right now, we have to say 'this is for women/girls,' but the lines are getting increasingly blurred and maybe we won't have to worry someday, but for now, we have to bring stuff up to parity, good stuff," Fox says. She also is interested in teaching the next generation of programmers how to deal with privacy and security issues. "I want to find a way to introduce the next generation to these issues and be relevant," Fox says.
